Can anyone give me any hints on getting the anouncments to work, other than what is in the book?

Did you try a factory reset?
If you're running conventionally, the instructions in the engine's user manual should be sufficient.
If running under DCS, a very complete explanation may be found in The DCS Gauge Companion 2nd Edition on pages 1403-107.
