My sound just suddenly stopped working in the turbine while it was running just fine.  Engine runs fine by itself.  Burnt smell from the tender but  I do not see an obvious board failure when opening it up.   Plug in connector looks fine.  I see Lionel has a railsounds 1 board for $50 still for this tender so I am thinking of taking a chance on that being the fix to this problem.  I thought I might get a comment from the forum experts before ordering up the part from Lionel.  Thanks for any advice.

I forgot how old that one was.  Truthfully, it's just as likely the power supply board that's not available.  However, I wouldn't spend $50 to find out if maybe the RS1 is the failing board.

My first step would be to check all the wiring, and also substitute a known good 8 ohm speaker.  Next would be to see if you're getting power out of the lower board.

If all that fails, my plan would be to replace it with the RS board from the Legacy S2, MUCH better sound and fairly easy to graft into this one.  If you call Lionel on Friday, you can get it on the 1/2 price sale.

It might be possible to actually check out the power board to see if there's a failure there.

If tender connected to engine it acts like a short somewhere. Things go dim, engine acts poorly but tender red rear lamps and backup light do work (weakly) if that aids you any.  Engine tries to run connected but poorly.  Disconnect cable and engine runs great.  I first noticed periods of no sound at all but it came back up finally.  Then this mess .

hey gunrunner!  I have examined  very carefully under great magnification both boards.  here are my findings.

!.  I can see no problems in the smaller board.  All connections appear ok.  No burn marks.

2.  The larger board shows brown oil like liquid deposits at the very front of the board.  I see a small silver can (2 leads from it) and a very small black can, a lead out of both ends, brownish deposits underneath both these assemblies.  A red and brown wire connected very near by these components lead back to the power board (one to each side of board).  At attachment point these wires to power board are clean.  Does this help in your diagnosis?   There is a 3rd wire (yellow) which I believe is ground?  If I desolder the red and brown wires from the railsounds board and reconnect to power should I see 12 volts on the end of each wire to power RS1?  If my reasoning is true to here, and the larger board receives a 12 volt signal without response then railsounds 1 is the defective board?  Sorry this is so lengthy.

Pulled sound board friday and connected everything up as original, less sound board.  All runs fine with original power board, tender lights and backup light  AOK.  Got with Joe, he's sending me his  two boards.  Does appear  that should do it. Easy 3 wire reconnect for just the sound board.  Will have a spare power board too.  Thanks for all the help!
