From my parts bin I have enough to build a late version 675. The problem is the the axle bearing are completely worn. I have not yet replaced bearings in a frame motor. I can easily strip down unit of wheels and axles. I think the old bearings could be drilled out. How are the new bearing installed? I have the Lionel press and tools, but without separating the frame how are new bearings pressed? If I do separate the frame can the spacer bars be reused? I know that when the old bearings are out an adhesive like CA could hold the new bearing in place I just never have done this job and can't figure out how to do it. Sorry for the rambling on....

Honestly, you would be better off just buying one at a swap meet. There are no exact replacement bushings for these available. Jeff Kane has some generic bearings that are similar but thicker in width. One side is relatively easy to press in, the other not so much, you will need to get creative. I would NOT separate the frame halves. One guy told me he made some from brass stock and drilled through the old ones. A good machinist could probably make something but the cost is not worth it.

Got the bearings out with no problem. As Rob commented the bearing are not available. Talking with Jeff at the TT there is a frame and field available that Lionel used in the 1980's. For $15.00 it is the way to go. FWIW here is a picture of the frame with bearings out. I think this is one of the few times I could not bring a PW piece to new condition. This thing has only been out of production for 60 years.

If you had been able to get bearings could you have installed them without separating the frame? Were they staked from the outside or inside? At this point it looked like separating the frame would have been the easy way to reassemble the motor if the spacers had been available. That would be the easy way to get the fiber collector plate in. I assume that the motor field assembly is attached only to the photo side. Thanks for this interesting exercise.
The bearing are installed from the inside and staked from the outside. If I could have found the bearings I would install both sides then inserted a steel block between the two bearings. Then the bearings could be staked from the outside. On this unit there is four different bearing part numbers. I am going to put this frame back in the bin, sooner or later I will find someone that has these bearings. It's not the first time one of us has been on a parts quest.
