Hi Pete. There are several very good brands available from our Forum sponsors. Check the ad bar above.
As far as we know, there aren't any ways to darken the smoke...
Toy train "smoke" is a fog effect. It does replicate steam.
The gray and black material in real locomotive smoke is a by product if incomplete combustion. AKA this is ash and particulate matter.
Since toy train smoke is just vaporized oil, water or glycol/glycerine (based on the particular smoke unit) it will always appear "white". It is scattering the ambient light the way a cloud does. You can use lighting effects to make the smoke appear darker much the way clouds change from bright white to darker gray depending on where the light is coming from (aka front/back/side light).
I also recommend megasteam. It smokes great, with a wide range of scents or unscented.
Yeah - megasteam. Only stuff I use
I've found Lionel Premium smoke fluid to work the best in Legacy engines,Megasteam for everything else.
JT's Megasteam seems to be the local favorite
Megasteam is great.
The only thing better than Megasteam's product is their customer service!

Now there's an endorsement!!!
That's all I use is Mega Steam, it's fantastic.
