Salutations everyone,

I’ve been buying PFE cars (Atlas, RC, IM and even a single 2-rail K-line) for my USH Big Boy (4014) to pull.  I’d like to have the correct liveries for these cars for the time period starting from 4014’s delivery (November ‘41) to 1950.  My BB has the  “As-delivered” after-cooler air compressor piping on the front porch which is correct until sometime in the early 50’s when it was relocated so I need to focus on the liveries used on these cars during this time period.  When did the dual-logo livery start?

I have located a photo of 4014, taken in 1948, still showing the "as delivered" air cooling piping. Thus, by 1949/1950, all the 4000s had had the after cooler piping up-graded to the "later" appearance.

so I need to focus on the liveries used on these cars during this time period.  When did the dual-logo livery start?

There is an excellent book about the Pacific Fruit Express company (one of the authors is Dr. Robert J. Church), which should answer any/all your questions concerning PFE equipment.

Correct. According to my book "Pacific Fruit Express" (Second Edition), the single railroad medallion on each side was from 1922 - 1946. The use of both railroad medallions, on each side of the car, was from 1946 - 1960.

Thus, to answer the original poster's question, there would have been a preponderance of single medallion cars for the time period of 1941 thru 1948.

Thus, to answer the original poster's question, there would have been a preponderance of single medallion cars for the time period of 1941 thru 1948.

He asked when the dual logos started which reference books say was 1946.

He says he wants to know what cars ran during the time frame of his engine, Nov '41 thru the early 50's, it could be no dual heralds to almost all dual heralds as we don't know his actual selection of the years.

I was hoping to run all the PFE cars that I’d recently purchased, wood, steel, single and dual heralds with my 1940’s version BB.  It didn’t occur to me until after I’d purchased the first dozen cars that I might have painted myself into a corner.  Fortunately, there appears to be a window of approximately 4 years (1946-1950) that I can correctly run everything and an earlier window if I omit the dual herald schemes that started in ‘46.  Jack says my engine was upgraded no later than 1950 so I’ll have to respect that regarding any other cars (Livestock) I plan to include.  My PFE book (Thompson Church Jones 1st edition 1992) arrived so I should be able to find answers to any further questions.  Thank you to everyone who contributed very accurate information.  

Finally, and off-topic, I’d like to thank Jack W. (“Hot Water” as he is known to us) for his Notch-6 two-part interview.  The separation of 4449 from her tender at speed and the insensitive Burlington TM who goaded Doyle into a speed contest were two favorites.  Great stories, thank you for sharing.

Thanks, however we were NOT on the "Burlington", but were on the Illinois Central RR, thus it was an IC Trainmaster.
