I have just been given a half dozen PFM Switch Machines that I know nothing about.  I have several manual Gargraves switches on my layout and I am considering making them remote using these mchines.  I assume these are undermount machines but can they also be used on the top side of the layout and camouflaged someway?  Does anyone know where I can get an instruction sheet for them?  I have searched the internet and found very little about how they work and could find no source for an instruction sheet.

I did see references to high current useage.  Maybe I should not try to use them.  Any opinions???

I have about 30 on my layout.   Mine are a mix of mostly NJCB, with a few Kemtron and PFM thrown in.    They have worked well for me.   I have had a few of the NJ machines break the crank on the end of the plunger from fatigue, but the layout is over 25 years old.

You can mount them any way you want.   I have many mounted under the layout.   It is sometimes difficult to adjust them there.   I have some mounted on top that I have camuoflaged with lichen or buildings.    A top mount is pretty easy.

I always put a V-shaped bend in the throw bar.   Then I can widen or narrow the V to adjust the throw.

The NJ machines will work well once you have them adjusted so they move equally in each position. You can mount them either above or below the table. Depends on your ability to work under the layout. (Some of us don't bend as wall as before.) Also, if you do mount them on top, check out the model airplane section of your lhs. They have nylon push rods which work well for remote mounting of the machines. Then the machine(s) can be inside a building and still be on top. Somewhere I have a connection diagram fot this type of machine. If I can find it I'll try and post it.
