Has anyone ever built a model of the poling cars used by some railroads during the steam period? You can find examples on Google ( for railroad poling cars). I understand that it was a dangerous task, and that, by the advent of diesel switchers, most railroads ceased poling cars. However, I think it would be fun if you were interested in the older MOW activities to have such an old timer on a sidetrack. I may consider doing one starting with a transfer caboose. Any thoughts?  turtle7

I dont think it was banned until the late 50's -early 60's, beyond the steam era

Yes. Some RR's ordered their 1st Gen diesels with poling pockets, as the need for poling (such as busy pulpwood yards) had nothing to do with the type of motive power.

It had to do with tight confines and getting cars past full-and-then-some sidings where there was no clearance for the locomotive. Many of our 3RO sidings are like that: "....I can get just ONE more car in there...OOPS - the loco bangs into it....").  Turns out, it's prototypical, at least in some yards.
