Forget about the regulator!  You can easily wire around the regulator and just power the smoke unit directly from the R2LC in the locomotive. Cut the regulator completely out of the circuit.  Change the resistor to a 27 ohm resistor, and wire from the smoke pins on the R2LC socket (pin 5,6) through the smoke switch and on to the smoke unit heater connection.

Ok sounds easy enough... but stupid question... when you say "Change the resistor to a 27 ohm resistor" where am i putting the 27 ohm resistor... the regulator and smoke unit are completely removed so i don't have anything to go by...

It looks like there is a 3 pin connector on the smoke unit...

So would ultimately R2LC pin 5 go to pins 1 and 3 on smoke unit and R2LC 6 go to pin 2 on smoke? and somewhere there is a 27ohm resistor or am i way off ...

oh ... or is the pin 3 using the 27ohm resistor from the ac 18v wire? i think i should just wait for an answer
