I’m pretty sure that’s how Frank Timko got started.

snstrains.com is the supplier for Gilbert can motor conversions.

Timko has/or had the ability to remove/re-install existing worm gears on new can motors.  IMO, a big part of can motor replacement.  My most noted Timko replacement was a die-cast Weaver 0-8-0. 

I second Tom's reply - SnS has can motor replacements.  Port Lines Hobby has them also - and a nice intro writeup on their website.  I think Port Lines has can motors from both SnS and Timko.  The Timko version has the flywheel (at least per the website)

Get the one with the flywheel.  It is the better of the two.  I have one in my Royal Blue and it works great with a dalee reverse unit.

I got mine from Portline as well.  Two without flywheels and one with.  There seems to be no appreciable difference in the running, but the flywheel is tough to get into a Flyer 302 Pacific.  All 3 engines are DCC and run well (Reading Pacific 210, Pennsy K5 and New York Central Hudson).

You can make a home brew version with a gear reduction worm gear.
