In my latest renovations, I decide to add the old Lionel milk car (3462) and platform to one of my sidings near the edge of the table.  Everybody always like the milkman throwing the cans out on the platform.

I am using two Z4000's to power the layout with both DCS and Legacy.  The track is Fastrack.  After inserting a Fastrack operating track (6-12054) I put the car on the track and pressed the button.  At about 17 volts the milkman buzzed a lot but barely moved.  Since it hadn't been used for a few years I figured it must be dirty.  On my bench everything seem free, so I connect it to my old ZW and the cans were thrown across the room.  Back on the layout virtually no movement.  I isolated the center rail and moved the ZW to power the siding.  Once again milk cans went flying.

I guess the bottom line is that these old solenoids do not like the power from the Z4000.

Has anyone got a work around or do I just get an old AC transformer to power that track?

Dan, I think the problem is related to your Fasttrack and/or FastTrack operating track, not the power from the Z4000.

The reason I say that is that I have Postwar Lionel operating milk cars and platform on a siding of my layout with Lionel Postwar tubular track, a Lionel Postwar O Gauge remote control track, powered by 2 MTH Z4000 transformers, and the operating milk cars work like a charm.

Thanks, Arnold.  I ruled out the operating track as being the problem by connecting that section to the ZW; it worked fine.  Having ruled out everything else, I’m left with the Z4000 being the issue.  I’m not sure why, old electro couplers fire okay and magnetic couplers work and, of course, yours work.

I’ll just power the operating track from a postwar transformer.
