I recently acquired a postwar 736 Berkshire which uses smoke pellets. I have never used smoke pellets. If I don't want smoke is there a way to turn-off smoke on a postwar steamer? If I don't put a smoke pellet in the locomotive will that damage the smoke unit? Thanks in advance for advice.

There is not a switch to turn off the postwar 736 smoke unit. Running without pellets will not cause damage. If you are concerned, you can remove the boiler and cut one of the wires that go to the smoke unit.
As Bob said, you can run the pellet type heater all day without a pellet with no damage. Much more robust than the finicky units of today.
Thanks for the quick answer. I asked because in modern locos the instructions always warn you to turn off the smoke unit if you don't put smoke fluid in.
