Hi all this is my first post. I mainly do HO scale but since I came across this big MTH Premiere Hudson sitting in a Hobbytown store I couldn't resist buying it for $200. In excellent shape too but no box. So as I begin I would like to upgrade to PS3 and what type of power supply would be good to use with it? I purchased a Z1000 which runs it fine and I also purchased a set of 8 Lionel heavyweight passenger cars and 1 K line RPO. bummer because the Z1000's circuit breaker tripped it off. I may have too many cars running behind it and drawing too much power as I was told by Little Choo Choo Shop in Spencer, NC. anyway would like to see what type of power pack would be good after I upgrade to PS3.

thanks

Ones that fit.  There are kits.  If you have access to an amp meter you can read the pull of the engine alone with smoke on.  Probably about 1.5 to 2 amps depending on which model Hudson. Then add the lighted cars one at a time to see what they draw.  8 at about .5amps would add another 4 amps in cars alone. Pushing the Z-1000 limit.  You could up to a Z-4000 or Lionel ZW.  G

its the #5344 Premiere not Railking. They came out when my wife and I got married in 1996 selling at $899. I did put the cars on one at a time and thought maybe it was the Willow Range. I figure it may be those bulbs in the cars drawing too much voltage. I've found some one selling the LED strips on ebay so I may start from there.

Take care.

Converting the cars to leds is a good idea.  I presume you are aware that leds “like” DC current while your transformer and train are AC.  As stated above, commercial conversion kits are available supplying all the parts you need.  Or, if you are a bit adventurous and have some minimal soldering skill, there are also DIY options from parts sourced from various suppliers.
