i have a engine that is from the late 30's i put a new e-unit drum in yesterday and when i put it on the track put some power to it and it started to smoke.  it look like it came from near the feild coils.  did i just ruin this engine?  or is it posable to bring it back to life now.  i tryed it on the track agean but it did not do anything at all.  it was like there was no power going to it.  any help would be great.

traindork(?),

1)Check all of the wires to and from your E-unit. 2)Check the windings on the motor. 3)Check your commutator 4)Did you replace the brushes if so, what shape is the wiring in?

If a person buys a prewar piece to play with, be it rolling stock or accessories ALWAYS redo all the wiring. If you want the original look you can buy new cloth covered wiring in almost every original color. If you buy a piece and have no intentions of ever running it leave all the original wire intact.
