Hi All,

I just completed a PS2 steam upgrade that tests fine in conventional mode -- lights, bell, whistle, motor, etc. When I try to load a sound file the loader program reports "No engine was found on the track."

When I place a different engine on the programming track the loader recognizes it and I'm able to upload a sound file to it, although the loader does "shift down" to a slower rate when loading to section 13. The engine reports a signal strength of 10 on the program track.

I have had problems with bad batteries before so I tried 3 different batteries and a BCS clone but none caused the engine to be found.

When running the loader, at the step after finding the TIU, when it displays "searching for engine...", I can hear some white noise from the engine speaker for about 10 sec. then the loader displays the error "No engine found on the track" message. The message also refers to not setting the engine address to 0, but I have no idea how to do this (and the BCS Companion says it can't be done anyway)

I've never run across this before and at this point I'm stumped. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Chuck

Hi G,

The board is installed in the tender and connected to the engine using the MTH harness from the upgrade kit. Red leads are definitely going to the center rail and black to the outer rails from the 7-pin connector. This engine had center rail rollers in the tender too, so I connected them to the red wire ahead of the harness to provide better connectivity over switches.

The only sounds I get are the test sounds for whistle and bell, and a low volume high-pitch whine from the speaker when the power is turned off. I've heard this with other upgrades so I believe it's normal. When the loader starts searching for the engine, the engine speaker emits a low "shhhhhh" sound for a few seconds, then the error message is displayed.

I'll take another look at the boards to ensure they're seated correctly. Sorry for my ignorance, but what's the "Torrid"?

Marty,  That is not true.  Any PS-2 3V sound file can go into any PS-2 3V board.  You don't have to use upgrade files.  You just can't use PS-2 5V or PS-3 files.

The Toroid is a donut object with wires wrapped around it.  You can see them on the top of the Power Supply Board (the one the 7 pin connector and battery attach too).

Can you eliminate your engine harness by powering the boards directly with alligator clips.  Red output from TIU to the red wire and black to the black.  Leave the 12 pin in so you have sounds, but do not connect engine.  This way we are working with board alone.    G

There is a suggestion for 25 feet of cable.  It's significant to note, that MTH in their shop does have a coil of cable on the bench from the TIU to the test set for loading sound files, so there may be something to that.

I think they also use DC power, another thing that's supposed to make it easier to load sound files.

That's what I've heard as well, however, none of that is at all necessary when dealing with PS2 sound files.

Further, I've done any number of PS2, and PS3 sound file and chain file transfers without any issues at all, without resorting to either of those "techniques".

John,

this was on the MTH PS/2 test setup that they had the extra feed and DC power for loading the files

Were there actually two setups, one for PS2 and another for PS3? If not, you were looking at the PS2/PS3 combined test bench setup.

I've been told the same story from MTH tech support, however, I believe that there's a difference between the theory of what's necessary and what's actually necessary in practice..

If I had to venture a guess, it would be that the distinction was arbitrary and that both benches were available to do either PS2 or PS3 stuff. Otherwise, it would be a potential waste of assets.

Well, there was only the PS/2 test-set on one bench, and the PS/3 one on the other.  OTOH, maybe that was just for the class I can't really say.

Hi Chuck,

It sounds like your board has been set to an engine ID that is out of range.  The fact that you can't load the engine into the remote is the tip off.  Try "recovering" the engine.

MENU / SYSTEM / ENGINE SETUP / RECOVER ENGINE

This must be done on TIU 1 with no other engines on the track.  Once the engine is recovered you should be able to add it to your remote.  If it loads to the remote you should then be able to install the sound file.
