Thanks Gerald,

I just obtained a MTH engine that has this and there was no mention of that feature on the descriptive label on the box nor in the instruction booklet, hence my question.  Now, do I have this right....one just rolls the thumb wheel up and down to activate that feature?  If so, I'm not impressed.  Yes, it does change the pitch of the whistle, but still, it does not have the desired effect that I was hoping for.  Perhaps someone could tell me if I am doing anything wrong.  Lionel's Legacy whistle activation slide switch is so much better controlling the whistle function.

While I personally agree the slide switch on the Legacy remote is better suited to such a function, the MTH whistle can be made, with practice, to REALLY sound GOOD. A friend has the most recent Premier Berkshire, which has the NKP 765's whistle as the ProtoWhistle and it sounds dead on accurate and can really sing with a few quick spins of the thumbwheel.

To activate the whistle, find the Softkey that is listed as ProtoWhistle (I believe it is SPW). Once you hit that, the quillable whistle will be activated and you can blow it to your hearts content.
