My friend has the above locomotive.  It has a QSI board in it and it is brass, both the tender and the engine.   There is a 4 pin connector to the engine from the tender but it is separate wires and not bundled like I am use to seeing on MTH.  It has the 16 wheel tender and the speaker is mounted on a cross bar in the tender body, and not mounted to the tender floor which is what I am used to seeing on MTH.  There is a large Pittman motor in the engine.  Is this an early MTH product?   Or some other manufacturer?   He is interested in me doing the upgrade to PS2 and it definitely looks doable but I am concerned about doing it if it is not an MTH engine.  I could not find any MTH markings on it at all. It also has a 9 volt battery in the tender.  The cab number is #6465. If anyone has info on this engine I would appreciate it, especially if you have upgraded it to PS2. Thanks.

I could not find it on the MTH website.

I have both the two and three rail versions of the Sunset 3rd PRR J1 Texas.

In some respects it is even more accurate than the Lionel unit, and FAR more

accurate than the MTH.  Sound was originally QSI generic, but since Lionel

won't sell you the unit out of their 2001 PRR JAY, you're stuck!  A PRR K4s

whistle would be pretty close for this loco, although the JAY whistle is a

touch higher due to the boiler pressure increase.  Not sure what would be

the best substitute here, out of the sound chips currently available, but

the 2001 Lionel is far and away the best, since it's based on real PRR JAY

recordings.

Thanks all for your replys.  I agree it sure seems to be a 3rd Rail engine.  The only MTH J1s were all PS2 around 2005 on their website.  The pittman motor does have a big flywheel on it so I should be able to upgrade to PS2 and download one of the current sound files.

prrhorseshoecurve:  I was not sure if MTH did brass back in the early nineties when they made stuff out of Korea.

Anyone out there do a PS2 upgrade of this 3rd Rail engine?  At least there is a ton of space in the tender for the boards and even an upgraded speaker.

Can't do TMCC, the owner only has DCS and due to a stroke he only has use of one hand for the remote.  I would be upgrading it as a favor to him.

Thanks again for the info, I will pass it on.
