I really enjoyed the conversion of my PS1 J and A to PS3 via 50-1911 upgrade kit.
I'm contemplating converting a PS1 F3 20-2153-1 El Capitan ABA (one powered A, dummy B and dummy A) and powered B 20-2151-4 and have a couple questions on options, and whether this makes sense.
Option 1: I assume I can buy one 50-1912 PS32 conversion kit and convert the A and dummy B. I assume the 2nd operating coupler can be added to the dummy B, and these be a pair. I then assume I could buy a second 50-1912 kit, but swap the parts from the dummy A and powered B, to make another PS32 powered A, dummy B pair. Is this true? I assume the two pairs of A-B's (p/u) could then be run independent, and/or put together in a lashup, for an ABBA (p/u/u/p) combination.
I assume this would cost me, retail, $400 in two PS32 kits. Is this silly to drop $400? Individual F3's from the most recent catalog are $450, which are PS3. Granted - there is probably a decent drop in detail from 1997 to 2016 F units, but $400 vs. $1240 is a big difference.
Option 2: I've seen a few less expensive premiere and/or railking PS2 engines every once-in-a-while. Couldn't I take the PS2 guts from these and put them in the PS1 F3's, and do the same as Option 1, for even cheaper? I understand I would be missing the BCR, but what else am I missing?
Which is the better choice? Has anyone else done this?
