I plan on adding a PS2 upgrade kit to a K-Line / Lionel SD70. does anybody know if I will need to purchase an MTH sound board for that?
Thanks

The PS2 upgrade kit includes sound and a speaker. Make sure that engine has a flywheel for mounting the tach tape and reader.
You shouldn't have to buy anything extra. Remember, this kit won't work on the K-Line stuff that has the motors in the trucks. I don't know what model you're talking about, the ones with vertical motors and flywheels work great with the kit.
As Dave says, everything you need should be in the box.
the model I have hac vertical can motors with flywheels. so I should be good to go.
Thanks
If you want to have a manually adjustable volume you will have to purchase a "pot." The kit assumed upgrading engines with PS-1 which all have the manual volume pot.
The upgrade instructions show connection to this potentiometer. But PS-2 system can and does control volume with the remote so the pot can be bypassed.

I've never seen an instance where you can't use the tach reader. I've ditched the bracket several times, I just build up spacers and epoxy it to the motor if the bracket doesn't work.
As far as bulbs, there are a number of bulbs in the kit that you probably won't use. You get cab lights, ditch lights, and MARS lights as I recall. I know that I have a fistful of extra MTH bulbs from upgrades, and I've done several that had dual headlights. The only thing is you have to splice in the dual bulbs into the single harness.
Of course, now I'm doing all of them with LED headlights, so I have even more bulbs. I've replaced many of my factory MTH locomotive lights for LED's as well, the difference is pretty amazing.
I like the smoke on/off switch, even running command, so I mount that in any case. I do typically bypass the volume control.
John, when you put LED's in are you running your resistor on the positive or negative leg? I suppose on the positive leg there will be a voltage drop across the LED. Ive never thought about LED's on my PS2 engines but I bet they look great
The location of the resistor makes no difference at all. It just has to complete the circuit and limit current. Put it anywhere in-line that it's convenient.
They look great, some of the MTH stuff had such a weak headlight that you wondered if it was on, the LED directs the light out and really makes it a headlight.
if you get a mth kit when lionel puts out the lcs app for the ipad it wont woork with the mth one because you need the speeker that has the lasier on it so onel the lionel won will work and be the best thing to do
OG3RAIL, if you want to sell your TMCC boards let me know
I have seen the Evan's Designs stuff, and I even picked up a few to know for sure what was in them. There's nothing wrong with them, I just prefer to customize my LED installations based on the exact problem at hand. The one-size-fits-all doesn't always have a perfect fit.
