I am considering upgrading an older PS2.0 RK F-3 ABA engine set. Is this as straightforward as simply upgrading a single engine unit? Specifically, will the PS3.0 protocoupler on the dummy A unit fire like the current one? Are the cable connections between the B and powered A/dummy A units retained as before? I can't find anythinhg that tells me if this is a more complicated process than the single engine upgrade? Thanks for any advice.

Why are you upgrading?  You won't get much over the PS/2 operation with the PS/3 upgrade, maybe a thinner wallet.

It's possibly not that simple.  If the trailing unit has a coupler, I suspect it may actually have a slave board.

Question, is the trailing unit powered?

I'd suggest you pop the top on the trailing A and take a picture so we can see what you have.

Of course, as usual, the actual MTH product number, 30-xxxx-x would be useful here.

Thanks a lot for your quick response. The trailing A unit is not powered. It's a 2005 RK issue 30-2631-1. It looks like a PS3.0 version came out in 2014 (30-20221-1). The trailing unit indeed does have a PS2.0 protocoupler. And, from what I can see, all I have is the cable from the 4-pin adapter with three 2-pin connectors, two going to the lights and one going to the protocoupler. My motivation for the upgrade was to maybe improve DCS signal strength. This one PS2.0 locomotive sometimes gets "lost" during startup with other engines (PS2 and PS3) on the same Z-4000 handle.
