My great luck continues

Can a PS3 board component be replaced???  I'm so tired of spending $250 to get boards replaced in my MTH stuff.

269E from set 11-5509-1

This train ran perfectly well all Christmas season.  Got it out to try something, hooked it up, and the rear coupler freaked out non-stop.  No worries, right?  hit the remote's coupler button and it stopped.

BUT.... then I smelled that smell that no one wants to smell around electrical things.  Everything was dead at this point.  I was thinking burnt wire or something so I opened up the tender and saw a component discolored (on that round black thing):

1) I was using the Z1000 running at 16.7V.  You might be right that it was not the root cause.

2) No John, it's the bigger piece right next to what you pointed at.

3) I didn't look underneath.  I don't know how a wire could have gotten pinched or grounded since I have never before taken the top off of the tender - there is no reason to except when this happens.

Back to my question: assuming the piece that is discolored is bad, can just that component be replaced or does the entire board need to be replaced?

thanks - walt

Thanks guys.  GGG I might contact you - I'm currently talking with a repair person that has been doing my all-too-many MTH repairs and upgrades - Bob Barth.

He said he can't repair the board but it might not be what's bad.  It's hard to say what action I should take: hand it off to him at York and wait to see what he says versus just sending it to you without his comments.

His repairs and upgrades have been very well done and if you know my bad-luck history with MTH stuff, he's done quite a few for me.

That 'wanted to try something' was a track design that I was thinking of using on this year's Christmas layout - wanted to see it in action - HA, that flopped!

Thanks John - you're most likely correct.  The discolored pieced is right "below" where you pointed - you can see it around the perimeter of the piece on top.
