3rd rail states that their engines are compatible with dcs. It also states that the engines are tmcc ready. Does this mean for the engine to be compatible with dcs I need a tmcc 6-12911 command base. Just wondering, besides 3rd rail engines cost a heck of a lot of money. Their are nice though

Well, I'm pretty sure they're not compatible with both electrically, so since they claim TMCC, they have to be assuming you have a TMCC command base to run them with the DCS system.
I always thought that 'TMCC' READY meant that TMCC could easily be installed. I wpuld assume that the engine would be Conventional. i.e. No command system installed.
I thought it meant it came with tmcc, that they assume I /you have the tmcc command base. I dont have tmcc but have dcs. I know if I had tmcc command I could use my dcs remote. I would just need tmcc 6-12911 from lionel. Then again as I stated before the engine are awesome looking but are very expensive.
I missed the "ready", that probably does indicate what Larry says, that you could install TMCC into them if you liked. Truthfully, from the other locomotives I've seen that claimed to be "TMCC Ready", that can simply mean they have enough space to mount the components!
Michael, are you confusing the 2 rail versions with 3 rail? The 2 Rail engines come with DCC which can be controlled with DCS. The 3 Rail engines come with TMCC, at least since around 2002 or 2003.
Pete
I looked on their website, and as Pete says, it appears they all come with TMCC, or at least all that I looked at.
I also went back on their website and it appears they all come with tmcc. I was hoping maybe someone had a 3rd rail engine, just to let me know. Their engines are beautiful with all that detail. I just wish the price was lower.
Michael - The 3 rail versions of 3rd Rail engines have come with TMCC since the early 2000's. 3rd Rail has used different versions of TMCC over the years. A few years back 3rd Rail began using TMCC boards produced by Electric Railroad.
I have a number of their engine and have enjoyed them all. They do run better if you use TMCC/Legacy to control the engines as opposed to conventional throttle control.
The 3rd Rail E7 I got this past November (2012) had TMCC (ERR) and Railsounds 4 installed. You'll need a CAB-1 and Command Base to initialize (assign a number to) the engine, then you can add it to your DCS.
It works fine except some of the notorious crew talk is garbled.
Bob,
You'll need a CAB-1 and Command Base to initialize (assign a number to) the engine
Only a command base is required. You can add the engine to DCS and edit its TMCC ID# without the use of a Cab-1.
Bob,
I am trying to purchase a tmcc command base 6-12911 on ebay. I have the DCS and the DCS companion book. The book is great, I know if I can get my hands on the tmcc command base, I will have a lot my choices in purchasing new engines. 3rd rail is one of those expensive options.
