Does anyone know if the coal load from the hopper in the Lionel PRR Flyer Freight expansion Pack is supposed to be removable? I've wanted to attempt it, but I am afraid of breaking it.
I can't say for certain, but I think that it is. Most hoppers have removable loads as far as I am aware. Interestingly, I too have the 'Eastern freight expansion pack' (6-30112), and my hopper didn't come with a coal load. Do you have the 'Western freight expansion pack' by any chance, with the UP hopper? (6-30128) If so, then that load is described as being a removable insert.
My hopper appears to be identical to the UP one you described; mine came with the Pennsylvania Flyer Exp. pack (6-30037), not the Eastern Freight one. Nothing on the packaging or instructions mentions anything about the load being removable
I was surprised how much force I had to use to remove the Coal Load from the 2 bay PRR Hopper #155936 that came with my Lionel 6-30050 Pennsylvania Super Steam Freight set. Thought I was going to break it just removing the original plastic coal load, but finally got it out and replaced it with something much more realistic, you can see it in the lower right hand corner.
What was your method for removing it? Sounds like once I get it out, I may have to make some modifications, as I just want the option to simulate an empty car headed back to the mine (wherever that might be ...)
