I am really a dummy about all of the new electronic items....that being said. Does anyone know when, where and how the LEDs were discovered. I know we are using them everywhere in this hobby. Last night I am driving behind a $50K+ dollar car and I can see that it's taillights are all LEDs.
Just wondering if they were discovered because of the space program or ????????

The first working LED was built by Nick Holonyak in 1962. He was recently honored for his pioneering work and is currently a professor at the University of Illinois. A few other gadgets that came fom the U of I include the plasma TV display and the internet browser. Pretty obvious I am an alumni, isn't it?
My Prius also has LED tail lights. The Prius @ 51 mpg every day is all about efficiency.
It appears, may be a couple, lower left, are burned out. (Edit add: There are 12 red LED's all working, just not pictured).
Fascinating LED's used for my Weaver E8 upgrades. Bi-directional two color.
