I had a set when they were first offered, failed within a year and Ro let me exchange them. The set set lasted much longer but still failed.

IMO,  just too many moving parts. I would recommend the 12052 without the gates. I have one of these thats over 15 years old no issues. The word is Lionel improved these on later releases, but with the way the gate goes up and down dozens of times during an operating session, its bound to wear out at some point.

As far as activation. Track power, either crossing comes with activation track that can be extended with extra track. There really isn't a way to hookup an alternative activation device ( Lionel made no provisions), although maybe someone on this forum has done so. They are fine at command voltage as well.

Action is a touch fast but not horrible. (not my video)

Depending on what your options/needs are. I went with the MTH crossing with sound as I have a two track crossing near "downtown". Its activated on accessory power using 2 pairs of Azatrax  I.R.detectors
