I have just successfully completed updating 2 Legacy 990s to version 1.60 so that I could independently lower the pantographs on my Legacy Old Rivets GG1, and my AMTRAK GG1.  Prior to this ability they would not fit through my tunnel portals, and the software prior to Ver1.6 will not allow this pantograph feature to appear on the Cab icons, even after loading the GG1 module.

As I gathered the necessary items for the update I realized I could not find my Y cable, so I proceeded without it,  using a USB to Com Port converter direct plugged into the cab.

I downloaded the installer program and the files and was able to get the base to communicate and it said the black module was updated successfully, even without the Y cable.   However upon pressing the set base address button (ON THE BOTTOM of the Base), it would not update the base.

The next day I went to my distributor who is nearby and happens to have numerous 990s in stock, and purchased a second 990 base unit since I have been wanting another full featured Cab2 and needed a Y cable as well.  I know they have a charging only unit, but I don't mind having an extra 990.  After going through the process of loading the software again it did work,  I upgraded from Version 1.52 to 1.54 and then to 1.60.  This worked fine on both units but I have 2 nagging questions.

1. Can you upgrade from Version 1.52 directly to Ver 1.6

2.  Can the black writable memory modules hold 2 files simultaneously.

I ended up getting it all working but it did take a while since it was my 1st time.

I was very appreciative of what I was able to read here on the Forum and also watch on Utube videos.

I have now set my bases to 2 different addresses and have set my Cab to address the base that is controlling my layout and using the other base as a charger and backup base for my store.

Perhaps someone knows the answer to my 2 questions.

Thanks,

Mike

1. yes

2. no, just write over the module for the cab update when you update.

One thing, even though you don't connect the second base to the layout, it's possible you cannot have it turned on in the same room as the layout. Only one base per layout, and I have had a completely separate test track pickup the signal from the base on the layout even though the test track was not connected to anything. So I would guess that there is a chance that a second base might interfere with the base you're using on the layout. Just a head's up in case you try having them both on and you run into issues.

Thank you cjack.

That information was very helpful.

I read in the manual that for club use to prevent interference the base channels can be set to different addresses, which is what I did.  I will see how that works out because I want to use the second base as a charger for the other cab2.

I will keep an eye out for interference between them thanks to your heads up.

Cheers,

Mike

Setting two command bases to different channels won't solve the track signal interference issue.  If you're really wanting to solve the track signal interference, turn one base off!  Remember, the channel is for CAB to BASE communication, the real issue with multiple command bases in close proximity is the track signal, which only has one channel, 455khz.
