I'm using two Z-1008 relays to provide current to the isolated lead rail on a ROSS 3-way.  All seems to be set up and "clicking" as it should and appear to be wired as per the ROSS provided diagram.

The problem.

One relay works just fine; the other puts current out the blue wire regardless.

They bench test correctly.

They click both ways installed when the switch motors change position.

Installed a new relay; same result.

Isolated rails are isolated when leads to relays are disconnected.

Baffled.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Suggestions for what to look for next gratefully accepted.  Dennis is checking out a diagram of how I installed them.

I had a similar problem that may relate to your issue.  My problem involved a crossover using two #6 RCS switches and two DZ-2500s, but could not get the relay to work properly for the lead rails of one of the switches.  After talking to a Z-Stuff rep, I found out that sometimes a newer DZ-2500 will not play well with an older DZ-2500. The new ones have a white stripe around the bottom of the switch motor; the old ones don't.  Once I replaced the older DZ-2500 with a new one (the other switch already had a new machine), all worked well.

Since your 3-way switch probably came with the DZ-2500s already attached, this is probably not the issue but it may be worth a quick check to see what DZ-2500s you have. If they are the same vintage then I'd call Z-Stuff and see what they think.

If the second relay results in the same issue, leaning towards the wiring. It would be much better for getting assistance if the diagram of your wiring was posted here. Even better a picture.

Having a wee bit of a challange following the wires so far.

We have had bad switch machines and relays which ZStuff replaced. If the relay functions correctly leaning towards a crossed wire, hence the continued search. To cut down on our tracing issues, we have used old striped computer wire harnesses to retain color codes.

Dennis Z at Z-Stuff came up with the answer (Hats Off to Dennis!).

The offending relay needed to have the grey/white wires which feed AC track current to the relay to be reversed from the wiring diagram.

Then all works correctly, including the switch motors, and the LEDs on both the motor and controller.

Whew!  That was an exercise to unravel!

The occasional need to trace the wiring makes me glad we took the time to label both ends of each wire/cable set, for controls as well as track power.

That has really saved a lot of time in the long run ...

The 40+ Z-stuff equipped ROSS switches/crossovers/yard setups on the CL&W work well.  They need to be exercised and tuned from time to time as do all the elements of toy traindom.
