Now that my company has left, I had the chance to test my recently purchased MRC "Dual Power 027" with my 2001-vintage PRR E6 (#6-28005). The big MRC unit runs this very nicely; start up is at about 3.5V, with a good running speed at around 4.5 volts. Anything higher then that and this high-stepping Atlantic really wants to fly. Smoke unit works well too. The bell and whistle effects (which I wouldn't normally use) work fine, using the buttons on the hand-held controller. So we're good there.

This is currently the only O gauge AC loco I have; my other Lionel is a similar vintage #6-28036 Long Island Consolidation, which I had to convert to DC. I guess one (or more) of the boards was messed up, so it didn't run (hardly) at all on alternating current.

As it is now, it runs great on DC, but since I now have this awesome AC power source, I'm wondering if it would be possible to convert the Consol back to AC. What would it entail to do this? Is this even possible? I know that AC can be converted to DC using a rectifier, but can this type of device be used in reverse?

I could gut the E6 to run on straight DC, but since it runs so well on AC (as Lionel intended), it seems it would be nice to be able to run both locos off the same source, and not have to switch back and forth from AC to DC.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Thanks; I will look into those options. And yes, just running conventional off this MRC unit would be fine.

I wonder how difficult it will be to re-wire everything: as it stands now, what needs juice are the smoke unit, motor, firebox and headlight LEDs...I'm not sure what it might take to "access" the sound boards in the tender through the tether..."gunrunnerjohn"?
