I am in the process of designing an "Around The Room" style layout and my maximum curve radius will be 72" using Lionel Fastrack.  My question is what is the minimum turnout size I may use for engines that require 72" diameter  curves?  Since the distance of the radius of the switch is short, I'm hopeful  that I might be able to use O60 or even O48 switches.  What say you?

Bob,

This all depends on each individual engine and rolling stock trucks, with my Tin Plate Trains the smallest I go is 054 because of the 12 Wheel tenders on many of my Tin Plate Trains.  You might be able to get away with the 048 if you have the right engines and rolling stock, you will need to test it.  I stay with 054 FTCC Switches and bigger on most levels of my FasTrack Christmas layout.  However I just picked up the new 036 FTCC Switches to see what could be done with them, on a new level for this years Christmas layout.

I wouldn't go any less than O-72. The distance is short, yes, but my big engines swing wildly on the O-72 now, I can't imagine they would work any easier through a tighter turn, especially if you're doing a crossover between tracks, as that is pretty much an S-turn.

Cost is pretty much the same too. I would ask why you think you need tighter turns?
