I've been working lately with my Atlas O roundhouse and needed to extend the stalls. While I think it is a very nice kit that builds up easily it is just a bit short for my 4-8-4 and larger steamers. Here's what I did to extend one of the stalls using the existing "office" portion.
First I cut out the rear wall right at the window area so the engine could pass through, then cut out the floor and roof of the office area before attaching it to the rear roundhouse wall.
Next I scratchbuilt a small doghouse using some corrugated siding material for the walls and painted the assembly the same green I used for all the other trim on the building.
Last I cut a simple square roof panel and sprayed it with textured black to match the rest of the roofs on the building and that's it. Done. Now I can hide a larger steamer in there and still shut the doors with some room to spare, and the whole thing doesn't look out of place. Total time about 2 hours.
Next project will be extending the other 2 stalls to accommodate my Allegheny. I'm still planning out how to do them. I'll post again when they get done. Thanks for looking and comments/questions welcomed.
