This engine is 19 years old and a favorite of mine. In fact only Railking steamer I have left. Sold the rest. It has a BCR and is a faithful performer. What happened is it was running on layout in DCS and the sound stopped and it went to full track power and was racing around layout. It would not respond to DCS so I had to turn down power on Z4000. After it stopped it would not power back up in DCS or conventional. There was no smoking electronics either. I mean nothing happens. No lights, etc. I figure the boards went but my question is what particular electronic on board most likely failed. Thanks again.

Proto 5?
Yes sir. Proto 5 with a BCR.
There is no such thing as Proto 5, at least at MTH, that's why I was asking!
There is the original ProtoSound, manufactured up to 1999, then ProtoSound 2 manufactured from 2000 to around 2008, and finally ProtoSound 3, first introduced in the HO line in 2006. I never heard of any other MTH "Proto" control system.

That system is PS2 5V, not Proto 5.
The lineage goes:
Proto Sound
Proto Sound 2 5V
Proto Sound 2 3V
Proto Sound 3
But to your topic the whole PS2 5V board in your locomotive is dead and there is no repairing it. A PS32 board with 5V connectors can be installed as a replacement to get back full functionality.
I meant Proto 2 5 volt.
Board failure most likely. Typical for that vintage 5V boards. Can be repaired with a PS-32 5V connector setup. G
I have had 5-volt boards fail in that manner
