Saddened to hear the demise of Carstens publications. Grew up with that company's publications, most notably Railfan and Model Railroad Craftsman. Countless peanut butter sandwiches consumed while dreaming of building a WONDERFUL layout somewhere in the future.

Two great things happened since:

1. I built the model railroad of my dreams, the Youngstown & Southern.

2. Yesterday spotted a NEW issue of RMC in my local supermarket magazine rack!

Thank you WhiteRiver Productions for not only saving this magazine, but improving it beyond its former self.

No doubt Railroad Model Craftsman, like Model Railroader are good HO gauge magazines. I do not see that they offer much for the O gauge community.  Being an O gauge modeler, I continually subscribe to my favorite, OGR and also the "other guys magazine" . I will renew with OGR this week. Why? because OGR has done more for the O gauge community than all of the other magazines and TCA national combined

Evidently you rarely if ever read the magazine.  Harold Carstens was a past president of the TCA and I believe a founding member of the TCA if not a very early member.  There were 3 rail articles for years, including something like Collectors Corner.

There are modeling techniques in all modeling magazines that can be extrapolated to any scale.

Obviously you have not read the magazine, or have just dismissed it based upon misinformation.  There's usually an O scale article ever so often and all of the articles tend to provide good information that crosses all scales for all scale modelers.  One of the few magazine that still supports hands-on craftsmanship model RR'ing vs. opening a box...

One of my structure articles was published in RMC.....took forever to get paid, but they did pay up.  I do understand that the responsibility for outstanding bills for past published articles remains with Carstens, so best of luck on that front.

Railroad Model Craftsman still publishes frequent three rail articles...there is one in the current issue, Keith Wills monthly "Collector Consist" article.  This one on how Lionel and American Flyer coped with shortages during WWII, including several color illustrations.  There is also a 2 page article on Dr. Frank Heynick's spectacular O gauge urban layout...including SuperStreets trolleys.  It's a construction article for a 6 story office building...including a ground floor Burger King.

Another article tells about prototype railroad's use of paper batten doors to seal boxcars to protect against moisture (not grain doors).  Interesting for steam era modelers especially.

So Dennis, take another look.  I think you'll find there is a lot more in RMC for O gauge modelers than you might think.

I also like their heavy slick paper and covers.  Makes Model Railroader's lighter weight paper and covers seem kind of cheap.

Sorry about you who lost money in Carstens bankruptcy.  You can always file a claim...but I've never collected on one.

Gotta say though, that the new publishers are a quality firm.  I'd sent a renewal to Carstens last June...and White River Productions informed me the whole year of my new subscription would be honored.

The new issues of RMC look good...I'm looking forward to reading them monthly for many years to come.

Some people never have anything good to say.

MR, RMC, and the NMRA magazine all have information that is transferable to O, and reading other folk's perspectives often gives a fresh way of looking at what I'm doing.  And I find the rivet counters to be entertaining.

Paul,

As a kid, I too was a voracious reader of and loyal subscriber to both RMC and MR, dreaming similar dreams of fantasized layouts in my future.

I went to the TCA national convention when it was held in Burlington, VT and at the banquet was privileged to meet Hal Carstens, publisher of RMC.  I was privileged to tell him what happiness his magazine had brought to me with each publication run.

I'm glad to learn that this venerable publication is back in print again.  I will look for it on line and subscribe for old times sake!

As for criticisms elsewhere on this thread about being spammed to buy other train magazines by Kalmbach, my response is that we in this rich and diverse hobby are indeed fortunate to have the plethora of train-oriented publications which are available to us. The publishing houses which create these very attractive and professional magazines are literally members of a cottage industry, run virtually on a proverbial "shoestring".  I for one salute all these persistent little firms, including my favorite, OGR, for providing us with their excellent literary efforts.  A few marketing emails informing me of their products in other scales and gauges are a small price to pay for the truly welcome contribution they make to my enjoyment of the hobby!

Glad to see RMC back and better than ever.   White River is no novice printer and I like the higher quality of cover and pages.
As an S scaler, I appreciate that RMC supported us, unlike other mags.
And, I like it that they kept Bob Walker, whom I've met, and like his "folksy" writing style.
All in all, a big win for the hobby.

Actually, RMC and MR transcend any one particular scale.  The content is equally applicable across the board -- especially if you're into any kind of hi-rail segment of this hobby.

Regarding RMC, it brought a smile to my face to see such a long-standing magazine back on the rack.  Saw the new issue at Hennings Trains (on the scale side of the store).  And later in the same day, also saw the new issue of RMC at Wegmans of all places!
