At a good price, I knowingly bought a used Lionel Bandstand (6-14164) with an inoperative tape cassette player and (probably) a burned-out audio board. However, the on-stage lights work! I placed it on my layout as a display piece with an audience seated on benches and cars parked for a concert.
I know, Lionel recently announced a digital audio version of this accessory, but I don't intend to buy it. Instead, I want to adapt my existing "mute" device so it could receive the stereo audio output from an under-platform hidden CD player. Its speaker wires would be routed to the bandstand.
Now comes the difficult part ...
I want to remove the base of the bandstand, remove the "guts" of it (tape cassette player, audio amplifier, and speaker), but keep the lighting circuit. Then install two small-size speakers (L & R for stereo) inside the bandshell frame and connect the CD player speaker output wires to them. I may need to drill some inconspicuous holes in the bandshell body (probably at its back side) to allow the sound to escape into the train room.
Because the upper level of my L-shaped layout shows a Christmas theme with Dept 56 North Pole Village pieces. I plan to use the CD player to perform Christmas music arranged by Stan Kenton and performed by Boston Brass and presented via the bandshell musicians.
Suggestions on how to do this "makeover" are welcome.
