Has anyone had any experience applying static grass? Any recommendations for makes / models of machines? Types of grass? Etc.? I'm a totally newbie here and I'm thinking of trying something. However, I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that might not work for me.

Get @BigBoy's attention; I know he's used a few. I think Eric of Erics Train Youtube videos did something on them too.
If I recall right, general consensus is the kitchen screen type strainer and "dollar store" electric flyswatter handle hack" does one of the best, if not thee best job from what I've read/watched in the past.
Scenic Express, has a very good tool, and static grass. Most feel, it is expensive, battery may not be included.

I have one similar to this. Auction no. 193290883489, for an inexpensive start.
I did the electric fly swatter, 2 D batteries, strainer rig. Works just fine for me. Total cost about 7 dollars.

The homemade ones work great. No need to spend the $$.
There are dozens of instructions on the Web. Google "Fly Swatter static grass".

Been toying with this idea too. Does anyone know the output voltage of the fly swatter? You can buy negative ion generators on the bay. Up to 20,000V output! Is this overkill? Search DC 12V to 20000V High-Voltage Electrostatic Generator Negative Ion Generator. With shipping, about $10. Cheaper if you buy 2 - just sayin'.

Static grass started with NOCH of Germany. I've used it exclusively for my 60's styled Marklin layout. It is clean and resist fading, which can be an issue with the ground foam products.
Well I just built one....seems to work fine....certainly I feel the value is worthwhile a $10 item v. a $80 item. Practiced some with it tonight.....
