Is there a reason to physically open an engine to check the battery condition on QS1, PSd and PSd2 if the engine is running O.K. I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I can't find the search button on my computer right now. Sorry.
Just to add to John's answer, if you are running PS2 engines with the DCS system, be sure to let them run with the sounds and cut track power by turning off the transfomer. You may have to unplug a brick. Don't use the SHUT DOWN on the remote for this test.
Keep a record of when a new battery went in. 4-5 year for a 8.4V and about 7 years for the 2.4V. Charge them at the port if they have set idle for a few months before using. If they are regularly run and for sufficient time, they should do fine. G
If running PS2 with DCS, the INFO function in the ADVANCE Menu of the hand held remote will readout the batteries condition for the locomotives you select. Gunrunnerjohn has the best answer, replace the batteries with BCRs.
