Has anyone attempted to write a simple editor to edit the remote?

When I upgraded my TIU I could clone my main remote to my backup remote and the remote "image" file was on my computer.  I opened that file with notepad and was able to figure out some of what was there.  However any name or number change corrupted the file so the new one would not load, which indicates that there is some check-sum or values that have to be recalculated to do a download. There was probably some "invisible" control codes that note pad could not show that changed (who knows what goes on in the world of software...)

An editor would be handy for instance for those who might want to reorganize the remote to group steamers to one area, diesels to another, speeders and trolleys etc, rename/reorder turnouts or accessories.  Or regroup engines by road names/color/wheel arrangement/classification etc.  Or Santa just bought that new engine/train set and now want to squeeze it in between two entries, but that might involve tediously moving say the "bottom" 25 entries "down" one place to open a new place for the newcomer. (maybe I missed how to easily open a space in Barry's book).

Seems an MTH computer guru could knock out something fairly easily since they already know how the file is setup and linked; or that Hikel enterprises could do this, now that they have been allowed through the MTH curtain to see how the wizards do DCS magic.

Bummer!!  PIA if you want to change something. So in other words, if I want to move an engine from slot#2 to slot #14 address say, I make the change in the remote, then the DCS sends a command to that engine that its slot#2 address is now changed to slot#14 address, correct?

Oh well good way to waste an afternoon thumb twiddling and wearing out remote buttons I guess.  Or else if you get a new DCS system, think how you want to organize things so you have expansion room in the future and all your future speculative turnouts and accessories in order now to save future hassles .

Thanks Barry and GRJ.

So what if that engine is not on the track or on "deadline", then I guess you would see a check track or no engine found messages.  Which if there was an editor, then you would have to have all your engines on live track so everyone could be rewritten to new addresses, assuming such a thing could be done or managed.

What a headache!
