Southern E3 AA (2003). I've removed the four cab screws but the chassis won't budge. Of course I don't want to force it and damage something. Do I need to remove the speaker unit as well? Or?   I've been able to finagle the tires onto other units without removing removing the cab shell. But I thought this time I would lube the gears, necessitating removing the cab. Also, I can't seem to locate an owner's manual for this unit. Any ideas out there?

If it is a Lionel E-3 and like the Santa Fe or Milwaulkee Road, then you will have to remove/lower the die-cast fuel tank to access the two side door ladders for the cab in the middle of the chassis. These ladders go through the body shell  but are attached by a screw to the sheet metal frame under the fuel tank. They must be removed to lift off the body shell. The tank is heavy and full of speakers and electronic items, so care should be taken when loosening this item from the frame. It is a PITA to have to do this, but it is what it is.  I had to do it because the window glass fell out of a door into the body shell area, and the only way was to remove the shell and retrieve the glass, and then reinstall it before putting it all back together. Hope this helps. Dennis M.

I have an MTH E6 but these may be different than the E3.  The E6 is held on by two screws in front, two screws at the rear corners and two screws from the fuel tank diagnonally opposite each other.  The fuel tank screws have permanent washers on them.  They are the ones to remove.  The other two just hold the fuel tank on.
