I have been given my first MTH G Gauge engine for repair. Is there anything different from O Gauge engines that I should be aware of.
Thank you.

If it's a -8 diesel, it's the same as the O gauge except for the batteries are single AAs.
If it's a steamer, the board is in the engine. If PS2, t has some changes to handle higher amps usually.
What engine do you have and what's wrong with it?
Most of the time the batteries are dead or dying, on the early releases because they are so old.
what is the mth item number for the engine
Alan
Engine is a Santa Fe switcher, no idea on item number, no box. No idea on problems, was told only not working. Thanks for the tips. It might be a 70-2046-1.
I have that engine myself, if the number is correct. Let me know if I can help. I believe you will find it to be the same as working on an O scale engine. Of course, it's set up as 2 rail. Some guys can't figure out how to get them to move when the batteries are dead. I have been lucky on several used ones that have been left on shelves for years. They just needed some TLC. Look at the batteries for leaking or DOA.
Charge the batteries overnight and see how long they last after. or swap out for something else.

Thanks, what battery does it use?
If I have one here to take with the engine it will help greatly.
Oops! I missed your reply.
I'm looking at the MTH manual and it appears to use the same as O scale on this engine. It says some used the green (AAA) and some use the blue casing. I would take an extra blue AA set. It shows that in the manual.
Why don't you just take it apart and see what battery is in it and the voltage, sure it is probably a nicad
I helped a friend fix a G scale aba diesel which did not work was a ps 2 3 volt and the salve board went bad and blew the ps2 3 volt processor board I repaired slave board and then he put a ps 2 volt processor board and has worked great ever since!
