Report from Steel Mill Modelers Meet | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

OK folks, I got back from the Steel Mill Modelers Meet late last night (they still have a set of layout tours today and some planning sessions tomorrow, but that's all the time I could spare away from the family). There were 80 registered attendees.

The meet was a wealth of information for those interested in modeling steel mills and having steel mills incorporated into their layouts. Topics were concentrated on history, mill buildings, and steel-making processes - Blast Furnaces of various eras, Open Hearths, Bessemer Converters, Mini-mills as well as operations (yes, steel mill operations!). There were some sessions on redesigning your steel mill model railroad to incorporate it into your layout or to run it better.

Plans are underway to make the Steel Mill Modelers group a Special Interest Group (SIG) within the NMRA.

Of course, if you model in HO, you were in hog-heaven. Every sort of steel-related car, building kit, accessory, detail part, load, etc. was there in the model room. " src="http://www.modeltrainjournal.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif" title="Crying or Very sad" /> I managed to score a set of Rix ventilators and dust collectors (all scales).

There weren't a ton of models on display - I was a bit disappointed at that, but the quality was outstanding. Here are some photos:

Yes, I was blown away as well by the detail. I was also incredibly jealous of the parts and kits available to HO modelers.

But the models were fantastic. No doubt about it. I think a few of them were museum quality.
