If a fan driven smoke unit calls for an 8ohm resister, what would happen if you put in a 6 ohm resister ?, & what would happen if it called for a 6 ohm resister & you put in an 8ohm resister ?

The other question i have is if a part number for an engine isn't listed on the extended parts list for that engine & i know what that number is , where can i type that number in & see if it is in stock ?,i have tried on there parts ordering site ,but nothing comes up .

If you put a 6 ohm resistor in the 8 ohm unit, you run a high likelihood of burning the voltage regulator module out.  The 8 ohm in the six ohm unit will just smoke poorly.

You should be able to search on any individual part, however you have to change the drop-down from Product number or name to Replacement part number of name.  You also have to remove any dashes from the part number.

OK ,great John ,I just tried it & i found what i was looking for i don't remember me ever having to look up a part number like that ,thats because i never did repairs ,now i am starting to do some of the easy things a little at a time , the complicated stuff i may never understand ,i will do as much as I can ,with the help from the forum ,i really like doing repairs it gives me a lot of satisfaction ,thanks again for your help.     Gerald

Here is another question on resisters ,on a couple of my engines the lionel parts breakdown ,doesn't list the resister separately ,it list only the whole smoke unit, such as this way: smoke unit/6ohm regulated rect :, can this mean that it is a 60ohm resister ?, also it doesn't list the fan motor ,can i assume that i could use one of the other motors ,most of the motors that i could find for some of my engines are all the same ,i would think that i could use one of them for an engine that they don't the part number separately ?,i am trying to find out as much information now when i don't have any problem so if & when there is one i would know what to do,& i plan on ordering the necessary parts & have them on hand ,once i figure out which are the right ones.

John ,i goofed it is 6 ohm ,not sixty i wrote down one to many zeros ,so whenever i see that they only list the whole smoke unit   & they say 6 ,8 ,or whatever number ohm   then that number would be the size of the resister if i wanted to replace just the resister is that right ?  As far as the fan motor is concerned  it wouldn't make any difference which one i  used ,because with the last motor i put in it had the diagonal holes & the one i took out had the horizontal holes & i did not have any problem putting it in .

I can understand being safe.  You can do as you like and you can measure current draw if you want.  The Triac in the Reg is the same.  If heat sunk I do not think it will be an issue.  I don't think Lionel pushes much current through the ACREG.  If you want to be safe you can stick with 8.  I have repaired the ACREG at the triac level.  Usually it is a shorted smoke unit that takes it out, or early ones had issues.  G

The big problem with many of the earlier ones is the triac was just enclosed in the heatshrink and not bolted to the chassis.  Most of the later models with Legacy bolt it to the chassis for better power handling.  I've replaced some triacs in them to revive them, but I've also had some die that weren't the triac, never bothered to do any more debugging.
