Just bought 1972 o gauge allegheny ,tracks little rusty , engines wheels are a little tight, didn't test tender but herd needs checked for cushion inside so I don't fry the board, runs ,light works even puffed some smoke put I only ran for 30 secs and figured I needed to get some cleaning and lube information. Any help out there I haven't played with this train since I had the same one in the early 80's

thanks

Don't have any info for you, but right now it's 2AM on the East coast, which has the greatest concentration of train people. I think you'll get some response, but your best chance for an answer will come during the day on the Eastern Seaboard.

Also edit the thread title in the first post... "quick help please" might not catch the eye of someone who might know something helpul. A title like "Need help with 'new' used engine" will get looked at by more folks.

I have several 814Xs 2-4-2's in my Lionel PRR collection.  A very hardy starter set engine.

Check the commutator face.  You should see some copper.  If not, spray it with contact cleaner and clean the worn brush residue off it.

Lightly oil all the axles with a drop of oil.  Especially the places where the motor armature rides.  It turns the most.  Oil the gear axles.  Put some grease on the gears, lightly.  Check the rubber tire.  If loose or cracked, replace it.

You mentioned the tender circuit board.  That is the SOS board.  Ensure no metal part of the board can contact the tender frame.  Thick doube sided carpet tape can work.

Add about 5-6 drops of smoke fluid.

The two position reverse unit is normally trouble free.  The lever on the top is the lockout switch to lock the engine in one direction, either forward or reverse.

You should be good to go.
