I posted this on the 3 Rail forum, a member suggested that this forum may be the better place to seek help.

If interested, let me know and I will email you more information and pictures

This car belongs to a friend and he is interested in having it restored. He only has the engine, no rolling stock

i agree that you should at least give it a good cleaning first.  i would drop out the motor, get an old toothbrush and some dish-washing liquid in warm water and have at her.  use a good hot blast with a hair dryer to evaporate every bit of moisture and then see where to go from there.  the brass rails look as though they might need replating and you're missing at least one handrail stanchion that could probably be found as an original part, but i have a feeling the paint will clean up well enough that a restoration would likely lower the value.  the wheels look shot, but i know there are sources for those.

good luck...gary

At least some of the paint prewar Lionel used is water soluable. If the red paint on those pilots is the same as the red I've run across, it will just about wash off with plain water.
When cleaning trains, always try working in an inconspicous spot first.

Please do not have this engine restored. It's way too nice as it is, and should be conserved for what it is. If that does not satisfy the owner, then I would recommend selling it in original condition, and look for another one in the condition required, or, just go the repro route, if one that's as shiny as a new car is desired.

Nothing beats an original though. Nothing.
