Has anyone ever made decals or "skins" to replace the litho on these old cars?  I'd prefer decals so I could repaint them in my own colors and apply the "litho" details like grab irons, car end corrugations, doors and windows, port holes and grills, and rivet details.

Lacking this, does anyone have any suggestions on how to recover the "look" after repainting?

I may have a solution to your restoration projects. I'm the guy that Mike Nickel referred to.I have been  printing sides for Marx box cars and passenger cars. These are all redone artwork, not just a scan of an existing car. I will try to post photos of some of the sides as soon as I figure out how to upload them. Bear with me. I'm anxious to share my work.

I have sides for both 7" and scale boxcars. I started out making matching head end cars for the stock NYC passenger cars. I have also added a diner. Passenger sides also include a set op PRR maroon sides. I want to modify the Meteor car to PRR obs. Still thinking on this one.

These sides are printed on heavyweight archival photo paper with archival photo inks. I have several that I printed eight or nine years ago and have experienced no fading or other degradation of the images. That's why I have always used the best ink and paper.

Watch for the photos soon.

OK, folks. They are posted. Remember, these are just a few of the sides I have. Contact me individually and I'll provide more. I can't view th photos since I'm not a premium member yet so I'm hoping they are ok.

Sorry it took so long to get into this mix. I've gotten some good tips over the years from you all. Time to give back.

This is close to what I hoped NewMarx would do, and did not.

Joe and I are Hoosiers, so the Indiana roadnames were a natural.  It's a lot more affordable finding Marx junkers and buying a set of Joe's sides than it is buying the Atlas reefers as they come out.    I'm partial to that Nickel Plate Road baywindow caboose - High Speed Service indeed!
