I think I have something very similar. I'm planning to replace the guts with those from a wbb gp9.  The interior of the lionel shell needs opened up a bit to make room for the rear motor flywheel.  Also i have quite figured out the handrails or truck mounting yet.  If I just mount the mpc shell on the wbbfframe the handrails are a little off.   To mount the wbb motors on the lionel frame I would have to cut the motor mounting section out of the wbb frame and have it welded in place of the original truck mounts.

Another option is to repower it witht truck mounted motors like those from a k line or rmt engine.

Unfortunately this is all in the what if stage for right now until I get some more time to work on it this winter

let me know how you make out!

The easiest solution would be to replace the entire truck.

I believe that particular truck can be disassembled to replace the worm gear.
The cast metal side frames must be removed.

The idler shaft with the worm gear can then be pressed out and the worm gear replaced.

This can be done on this motor assembly because the shaft is only stepped on one end.
Similar postwar motors have both ends of the shaft stepped, making it impractical to replace the gear. (If someone knows of a technique, I would like to read about it)

Just saw this thread. You're right. Just pick up another engine, use the new chassis, and swap the shells. Relatively cheap and very easy. I've swapped many shells with Lionel traditional engines, mostly with the Geeps. Usually I take a newer TMCC/RS equipped chassis and put an older shell on it that I want to use, but there are a lot of options. The ability to easily swap shells is one great thing about these Lionel traditional engines.
