i know rip rap refers to rocks in water, well to me anyway but i have 2 separate loop and in some spots i am thinking of just gravel in between track like some real track i have seen idk what is technical term, rock bed. I have 5 inches between my tracks. Does anyone have pics of how they did theirs. i wanna see mixes of colors and coarse grades. i just would like to see what i am aiming for before i start. lol

The "sand style dirt" is actual dirt. I bought a Lg USPS Flat Rate Box full off of "The Bay" a couple years ago and just got around to using it recently. I started construction on this new layout in 2016. However, crucial back surgery in December of 2016 forced me to take a sabbatical and I didn't resume construction until around August of 2017.

nice, sadly ill have to buy dirt, this NC dirt is clay.
looking good. I wanna start mine, kinda scared though since i will be adding to layout table, scared the connecting of table will shake stuff loose.
How much dirt can I sell you? I might be on to something here. I'm pretty sure if you dry out that clay and sift it back on the layout, it'll look like dirt. I have good ole farm dirt and different sizes of crushed stone and sand sifted out. Let me know if I can help. I'll put some pictures up from my phone shortly.

I agree. Plus, it is very easy to change the color of most any loose material by soaking it in a ink/alcohol mixture.
The first picture is crushed stone with sifted dirt on the side. The second is fine crushed stone next to the track and coarser stone on the bank. Sifted dirt and ground foam on the corner. The third has stone on the bank and dirt and ground foam above. All the bases are Fusion Fiber tinted brown.
