Traveling by train thru the Canadian Rockies takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery you'll ever experience. And as a train buff, you can't help but appreciate all the engineering and hard work that must have been expended to build railroads back in the day.
My wife and I rode the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff, as part of the back end to a vacation that also included a 7-day Alaskan Inside Passage cruise in 2000. (Wow... Hard to believe that was 15 years ago already!). We spent 5-6 days in Banff exploring the surrounding area... then drove to Calgary for our return flight home. All told, we were away 17 days or so.
We spent 2 days on the Rocky Mountaineer, with an overnight stay at a hotel in the town of Kamloops. There were no sleeping accommodations on the train, but the logistics worked out very well for the overnight hotel stay. IIRC, the train split at Kamloops the next morning... We went east to Banff, and the other portion of the train travelled northward to Jaspar. All rail travel was during daylight hours. Magnificent experience!!! HIGHLY recommended!!!
