I have a yard with O Gauge tinplate Lionel track (mainlines are KLine SuperSnap). The yard has many switches connected to other switches in various configurations. With Lionel tinplate switches and Kline superSnap switches I get some shorting(sparks) and loss of power (short distance between rollers of 4 inches ). I'm getting no where fast trying to correct the shorting problem with tape and Liquid Electrical Tape. Does anyone have any experience using the Ross Tinplate switches in a yard as far as switching at slow speeds without shorts or loss of power? Ed Kaz

That's a great question and one that I spent hours trying to figure out. Sometimes the sparks show on the outer rail and seem to be when half the truck is on one switch and half on the next switch. Sometimes the sparks come from the middle of the switch. I have a lot of switches and some are aligned 4 in a row. Some switches have only the center rail steel pin with a fiber pin in each outer rail for the non derailing feature because the wye end of one switch is mated with the wye end of the next switch. Some switches are fine with some of the engines and not so much with other engines. Some long engines spark and some short ones go through without problems. My MTH S 2 switcher goes through them all fine and my 0-8-0 has a lot of issues.

It's been an interesting challange from an intelectual standpoint but after a lot of money in switches and time on my part I'm ready to move on. My friends have Ross non tinplate switches that they bought long after I bought all  my switches and they seem to be very happy with them. They seem to be engineered well but I don't know how the tinplate switches do when aligned in various patterns in a yard.
