TMCC equipped locomotives should run in conventional mode using TMCC with Powermaster set to conv, correct? When I power up the track, engine lights come on, but no other functions.

If your command base is powered they will see the command signal. They will not run in conventional. The Cab1 should talk directly to the powermaster so make sure your base is unplugged to run TMCC engines in conventional.

There was a least one bad batch of PowerMasters. The "easiest" way to tell the bad ones, is the red and green LED'S were inset and "rounded" when looking at the top of the PowerMaster. I had one and killed it with a simple derailment two weeks after putting into service. Lionel replaced it under warranty.
The good ones have red and green LED'S that are flush with the top of the PowerMaster.
