This project came about for 2 reasons.  First I found the machinery components for the mill, including the saw and roll tables.  These components took up a lot of space and I could not decide whether to use a ready built structure or build a scratch building. I had little experience in the scratch building, although I have built my share of kits.  Things started to move forward though when I bought a 200 count bag of coffee stirrers.  Finding cheap lumber sealed the deal.

I designed the project to fit around the machinery; therefore, the building is 96' x 34'.  I know...really big.

The structure floor and sides are actually component connected by the floor boards.  The roofs are removable and were built using a drawing as a template.

The belt drive system contains Crow River hangers, couplings and pillow block bearings.  The belts are vellum painted tan from a rattle can.

The belt drive will be powered by a steam engine located adjacent to the building.

Hunterline stains were used to weather the wood

Great job.  Very detailed.  Bet you had fun building it.  Wish I had more room as I barely found space for a cattle corral.

In 2015 we visited the Southern Heritage Sawmill in Long Leaf, Louisiana that looked like yours and had an old 2-6-0 logging locomotive, other locos and a belt driven machine shop from 1920.  The mill ran from the early 1900s to 1952.

Thank you all for the kind comments.  This has been a good project, mainly becuase I did not try and rush to complete.  I willl update this thread as I complete the steam engine, boiler and shed to house them.

There are a number of very impressive modelers on this forum and each week they inspire me to be a much better modeler.  I am always amazed at the skills displayed here.

Charlie, thank you for the pictures. I was not familiar with that mill but the pics could be the basis for some nice details and machinery.

Thanks again,

Paul
