Hello two railers.

I post more in the tinplate forum generally  but i have to do an exception today with that engine. I bough it at an auction in France and since i see so many old pieces in two rail by Carey Williams and others when I saw it I had to buy it.... Even if it has no tender it is very well built and looks really nice, for me of course...

I think it is a Hudson, very easy as i have also a Lionel 700e but who made this one ? I have made some research and finally i think it is a ScaleCraft model, maybe some of you could confirm or not.

It is a very heavy piece of cast brass and mainly brass pieces, there is certainly a powefull motor i wanted to test it but there is a short somewhere, certainly in the reversing system which is made by a lever on each side of the engine, it will be fix as all the other small problems, marker lights, front light to fix and some missing paint.

Major problem there is no tender with the loco, so it was cheap... What kind of tender does it needs ? A similar one to the Lionel 700t, i have a spare one but slightly wrapped and it would not looks nice. Maybe that this Hudson is not for the New York Central, there is some differences with the Lionel one. Any idea would be very welcome, and final question .... what are the chances to find the original tender ??? And where to find one even unbuilt or to restore ??? Maybe someone have a spare one ???

Many thanks for your help,

Hello French trains

Congratulations on your new Scalecraft Hudson ..... made after January 1935  ... is your steam dome a separate piece? and turn? ....in 1937 the steam dome was attached to the reverse  unit ... so you could turn it for back and forth ..prior the manual reverse was located below the cab.

The Scale-craft Hudson chose to model the earlier version Hudson with the feed water heater ..

Below on the photo of the two SC Hudson's ...front one is the 1934 model  ..I prefer this model as the details are more pronounced..it is easily spotted    by the two bumps on the sand dome ...1935 and later one big bump on sand dome .

Tenders are out there ... just timing ..they can be found with or with rivets .... made up till 1941 when the war shut down all operations ...  the SC Hudson was a popular engine ..many were made ...many survive ...I'm sure sales of the SC Hudson were greatly effected  after December of 1937 when Lionel introduced the 700E and 763   ....the 763 at 37.50 .in ready to run form was hard to beat .....  huge numbers were sold compared to SC and Mini-scale pieces ..

Sorry I do not have an extra tender at this time ....

Cheers Carey

I would not waste too much time seeking an authentic tender.  That is definitely a Scale Craft J-1d Hudson.

I would get a Lionel or MTH tender body, and go from there. I would trade my original Scale Craft Hudson tender in a heartbeat for one of those Lionel PT-4 tenders shown in a nearby thread.

The original tender is some sort of pot metal casting with very poor rivet detail.  The only worse SC tender is the ATSF - deserving, in my opinion, only of being melted down and recast.

Carey, many thanks for your precious informations and documentations.

The steamdome is not a separate piece on my loco, reversing is through a lever under the cab.

As I want to restore it in original condition I will wait to find the correct tender, I prefer all original pieces to modified ones. Even if this engine is common in USA there is not certainly many of  them in France but maybe one day a tender will appear on eBay....

All my best wishes,   Daniel

That is a great find in France! Maybe the tender will turn up from the same source at a later date?  Could have been separated and the seller was not familiar so just sold the engine this time and maybe the tender later when it turns up.  I have an SC Hudson chassis and three SC K4's all of which need the restoration treatment.  The K4 turns up much more often than the Hudson, but you still see Hudsons run through ebay  but usually they are miss labeled or not labeled at all by innocent sellers.  You have to know what you are looking for and jump when it appears. If I see one, I'll shoot you an email in case you are interested. Here is a scan of the tender prints.  Not mine, Can't remember where I found the picture, but it shows what you are looking for.

Shipping may be a problem, and my tender does not (at the moment) have genuine Scale Craft trucks.  But get Mario to assemble me one and I will ship to France.  Let me see if I still have original SC trucks around here.

My Hudson is modified, and has no "originality" points about which I could worry.

Photo in a minute.

Well, maybe 43 minutes later.  Note the sand dome and drivers are not authentic Scale Craft.  Also note that the rivets are quite uneven on the tender.  They are all like that, and most just sanded them off.  I chose to preserve them and de-accentuate the differences in size from one cluster to the next.  I do have two sets of proper Scale Craft tender trucks that can be transferred.SC Hudson 001

Thank you Dennis.

No chance to find the tender later, that loco comes from the same auction house where i bought the Lionel Hudson 700e and it was in a lot with other pieces in need of some restoration that have not been presented in regular auction, they just made a clean up before summer time. You will see in the tinplate weekend photo fun some of my last finds in the upcoming trends.
The tender print is very interesting. I don't need more projects for the moment but a K4, good idea it can be a nice piece to have.....
All my best wishes,   Daniel

That would be very fine Bob2, what I would enjoy is to have an original scalecraft piece from USA to display in my collection and also to present on train shows. The name Scalecratf is known by some collectors but never seen here or so rarely.

Shipping to France is very easy, if you agree to sell this tender i will tell you what to do, i have  no trip planned in your country in a near future but i also have friends in USA if it is more convenient for you to send a parcel. My email is in my profile so take your time and let me know.

All my best wishes,   Daniel

Interesting thread,  Always nice to see photos of SC Hudsons.  That Pennsy T1 in the background is interesting, as models of that Duplex were not common prior to about the 1990s.  The video link showed a model of the S1 duplex (6-4-4-6) with 84" drivers, aka "the big engine."  That was the loco displayed on rollers at the NY World's Fair 191939/40.  Models of that loco were also custom-built until the advent of brass import models decades later.  A very neat model of the "pre-import" era.

I hope our friend in France can someday obtain a SC tender to accompany his Hudson.

Hello Ray Bradbury

yes growing up is entirely optional

the T1 is an Alexander from 1939 probably used somewhere at the NYC Worlds Fair ... I'm very fortunate to own it . Here is a link to see it in action .

Carey, in your explanation printed with the video , you say the S1 lived on Long Island.

Many years ago I knew a fellow named John Martin, who had many unusual models. I can not recall if I saw the S1 at his home R/R when I visited him.  Was he the Long Island Owner you mentioned.

By the way There also was a very dear friend of mine his name was Maurice Amend , he also was a good friend of Mr Martin .  Mr Amend was also a collector of many unusual models, he had many freight and pass cars from the 39 worlds fair. As I recall most of which were Alexander models. They had a different type of truck, many of the cars were only lettered on one side.

Thanks for the trip back to yesteryear, brought back many good memories of things and friends past.

I do enjoy reading your posts.  THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

Hello all .....

Yes the cars on the 1939 World's Fair layout were unique...cast aluminium...wheels have ball bearings for the many miles they rolled ..and automatic couplers ....  please see photo for a few ....

Yes  John Martin was the owner of this S1 when it lived out on LI for awhile ...his son was in the Pittsburgh area  and sold it to a local hobby shop ...25 years ago + - who sold it  ...to the gentlemen I bought it from....I'm very lucky and proud to have it in the collection ...

if anyone can identify the year and month of the magazine copy I'd be grateful ..thank you ..I only have the copy as shown ...

Alexander made ..at least 3 of the S1's ........one with American Railroads on tender ( mine) and one with Pennsylvania on tender ...shown on the cover of Alexander's book ... ..and one with Eastern Railroad's on the tender..used on the  big layout ........

At the fair there were many train layouts and displays ...trains were hip at the time ...

Cheers Carey
