I am ready to tackle scenery on my new layout, but i am rather overwhelmed by the choices in turf. I was wondering if someone could recommend 5 or 6 varieties to get my glue wet with, so to speak. I have brown earth color latex paint as a base on the whole layout and probably will start on small sections next to the outside track. I have a small bag of fine green and one of medium burnt grass. I will appreciate any suggestions.

Five or six?
Just buy one of each of the hues in between bright green and dead grass. That is what I did. Do sections with a theme and pay attention to nature; grass is green in depressions awhere water drains to, dead where it doesn't, etc.

Good info and that's how I've done it, but I also add a grass called "Blended Turf" by Woodland Scenics that is made up of different colors of grass. As Lee has indicated grass is hardly ever uniform in coverage and color, perhaps except on a golf course!
John:
Search for Woodland Scenics on Youtube. They have some of the best scenery how to videos out there.

Two Scenic Express products that are good general cover. Click on the underlined to access a link.
You can request a catalog from Scenic Express. There is a huge amount of product available when you start scenery. It takes a while to become familiar with all that can be done. IMO the Scenic Express catalog is a great start.
We did a lot of work on the Fort Pitt High-railers modules last year before our trip to York. We used a lot of Scenic Express products.
